Why It’s So Hard to Stay Consistent (Even When You Know What to Do)

There’s something frustrating about knowing exactly what to do… and still not doing it.

A lot of us have tried to get into a routine more times than we can count.
We start, we fall off, we start again.

It’s not because we don’t know how.
Most of the time, it’s because we put everything else before ourselves.

We show up for work.
We show up for other people.
But when it comes to our own health, it’s the first thing to go.

The Shift That Actually Made a Difference

What changed for me wasn’t a new workout or a stricter plan.

It was letting go of the idea that I needed to hit a certain number on the scale.

This isn’t the body I had in my 20s—and that’s fine.
So why would I chase a number from a completely different time in my life?

Instead, I started paying attention to how I felt:

  • how strong I felt during workouts
  • how much better my mood was after
  • how my energy carried through the day

And honestly, that changed everything.

What Actually Works (And Always Has)

Once you take the pressure off, it becomes a lot simpler.

It’s not about trends or extremes.
It’s about doing things that are sustainable.

  • Eating real, whole foods
  • Moving your body regularly
  • Keeping it simple

Not forcing workouts you hate.
Not following whatever is trending that month.

Walk, lift, stretch, take a class—whatever you enjoy.

Do it alone, do it with a friend, or if you’re lucky like me… do it with someone you love.
I’ve been doing classes with my niece and it’s turned into something I genuinely look forward to—not just for the workout, but for the time together.

The Reality

At some point, you have to decide to prioritize your health.

Life will always be busy.
There will always be something else that feels more urgent.

But if you keep putting yourself last, nothing changes.

Be Easier on Yourself

A lot of people are way harder on themselves than they need to be.

The way we talk to ourselves matters.

If you’re constantly picking yourself apart, it makes everything harder.

Try this:

  • Write down a few things you actually like about yourself
  • Keep it somewhere you can see it
  • Read it when you catch yourself going negative

Shift the focus from “how do I look?” to “how do I feel?”

Because when you start feeling better, everything else usually follows.

A Simple Way to Start (At Home)

If you don’t want to overthink it, here’s an easy structure:

Warm-up (5 minutes)

  • march in place or walk around your space
  • arm circles
  • light stretching

Workout (15–20 minutes total)
Set a timer and go through this circuit:

  • Squats – 1 minute
  • Lunges (alternating legs) – 1 minute
  • Light weights (arms: biceps or shoulder presses) – 1 minute
  • Core (plank or crunches) – 1 minute

Rest 30–60 seconds
Repeat the full circuit 2–3 times

Cool down (5–10 minutes)

  • Stretch your legs, arms, and back
  • Slow your breathing

That’s it. Simple, effective, and doable.

I can honestly say I don’t see myself stopping again.

Not because I have to—but because I feel too good when I’m consistent.

And that’s really the goal.

If you’re new to working out or have any health concerns, it’s always best to check with your physician first.
